The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate. This report will be transmitted whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.
STATUS AS OF: April 7, 2014
Head of Old River (HOR) Barrier:
The construction on the Spring Head of Old River barrier began on Tuesday March 25, 2014. The closure is expected on Wednesday, April 9. All eight slide-gates will be in the open position.
Agricultural Barriers (Middle River [MR], Old River near Tracy [ORT], Grant Line Canal [GLC]):
Installation of the Middle River started on March 11, 2014 and was finished by March 17, 2014. The flap-gates are tied open as required by the regulatory permit. The installation of the Old River near Tracy barrier started on March 11, 2014. The closure is achieved on April 3, and the boat ramp construction was completed on April 7. A boater tender is on site for boat portage service. All nine culvert flap-gates are tied open. It is anticipated that the MR and ORT flap-gates will be in operation by either April 8 or early morning of April 9, prior to closure of the Head of Old River barrier. The partial closure of the Grant Line Canal was achieved by Friday March 28, 2014. Crews will resume full construction on Friday, April 11.
Environmental Permits Compliance Reporting:
Environmental compliance monitoring continues as scheduled. Staff is monitoring the Swainson’s hawks that still building their nest at the Middle River, Old River at head , and the Grant Line Canal sites. The Red Tail hawk still sitting on the eggs. The owls at the Old River near Tracy and Grant Line Canal sites are caring for their chicks (see attached photo). Sound monitoring resumed at both the head of Old River site and the Old River near Tracy site. The water quality sampling and monitoring continue at the Old River at head and Old River near Tracy sites. Monitoring will continue for the duration of the in-water work.
Water Levels and Water Quality Notifications:
No water levels and water quality concerns reported and DWR will continue to monitor the water levels.
Middle River barrier was closed on March 17th, Old River near Tracy barrier was closed on April 3rd, and Grantline Canal is partially closed. Spring Head of Old River barrier is estimated to be closed on April 9th, 2014. All flap-gates and slide-gates are open on all barriers.
Modeling results are attached and forecasted minimum water levels will reach target levels for the next few days. It is anticipated water levels will improve after April 10.
