The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate. This report will be transmitted whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.
STATUS AS OF: April 14, 2014
Head of Old River (HOR) Barrier:
The Spring Head of Old River barrier was closed on Monday April 8, 2014 all culvert slide-gates are open.
Agricultural Barriers (Middle River [MR], Old River near Tracy [ORT], Grant Line Canal [GLC]):
Installation of the Middle River barrier started on March 11, 2014 and it was closed on March 17, 2014. The culvert flap-gates are operating tidally as required by the regulatory permit. The installation of the Old River near Tracy barrier started on March 11, 2014 and closure was achieved on April 3. A boat tender is on site for boat portage service. All nine culvert flap-gates are operating tidally. The partial closure of the Grant Line Canal barrier was achieved on Friday March 28, 2014 and all culvert flap-gates are tied open.
Environmental Permits Compliance Reporting:
There are many nesting birds near the construction sites, however, none are being impacted by construction activities.
Western Pond Turtles have been seen in the vicinity of construction sites yet none have been near enough to actual construction to be impacted.
Water quality monitoring is occurring as required for in water work.
Sound monitoring has been conducted during construction at all sites.
Water Quality Monitoring:
No water level and/or water quality concerns reported and DWR will continue to monitor the water levels.
Water Levels and Water Quality Notifications:
Closure of Middle River was achieved, Grant Line Canal is partially closed, and DWR will continue to monitor the water levels.
Middle River barrier was closed on March 17th, Grantline Canal barrier was partially closed (center weir section open) on March 28th, Old River near Tracy barrier was closed on April 3rd, and the Spring Head of Old River barrier closed April 9th, 2014. All culvert flap-gates and slide-gates at the HORB and Grantline Canal barrier are open. All culvert flap-gates at the Middle River and Old River near Tracy barriers to be operating tidally starting April 9, 2014. (Actual closure of the HORB was achieved on April 8, 2014)
Modeling results are attached and forecasted minimum water levels will stay at or above target levels for the next few days.
