The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate. This report will be transmitted whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.

STATUS AS OF: November 4, 2005

Head of Old River Barrier (HORB):

The HORB is operating fully. The culverts were all opened October 21 per the request of our O&M operators to improve water quality downstream on Old River. The Temporary Barriers Project contractor will begin removing the HORB on Monday, November 7, with the breach expected the following day. The HORB is expected to be completely removed by November 15th.

Agricultural Barriers (Old River near DMC, Middle River, Grant Line Canal):

The Middle River (MR) barrier and Old River near Tracy (DMC) barrier are closed and have their culverts flap gates operating normally (tidally). Both the DMC and MR barriers had 20 foot wide notches created in the rock weirs to allow for passage of adult salmon that are migrating this time of year. The Grant Line Canal (GLC) barrier flashboard structure had boards removed to allow passage as well. Removal of the agricultural barriers will begin November 7, with a breach at the MR barrier on November 8, breach of the DMC barrier on November 9, and breach of the GLC barrier on November 14. These dates are approximate. All agricultural barriers will be fully removed by November 30.

Modeling:

Modeling was completed this week and the results attached. Water levels remain above the trigger level (0.0 feet MSL at DMC and GLC barriers, 0.3 feet MSL at the MR barrier). Modeling will not be done after this week, as the barriers will be in various states of removal beginning next week.

Modeling Outputs:

Middle River at Howard Road Bridge
Doughty Cut above GLC Barrier
Old River near Tracy Road Bridge

Notes:

Dredging at two agricultural diversion sites on Old River west of Union Island will be completed today. The two sites are just upstream of the sites we dredged last fall.
