The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate.  This report will be transmitted whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.

STATUS AS OF:  Friday, June 30, 2006

Head of Old River Barrier (HORB):

The HORB was not installed this spring due to high flows.  The HORB will be installed in the fall if needed for dissolved oxygen improvements in the SJR and if requested by DFG.

Agricultural Barriers (Old River near DMC, Middle River, Grant Line Canal):

The MR barrier will be installed beginning July 4 and should be completed by July 7.  This barrier is being installed to improved low water levels upstream of the barrier on Middle River.  A complaint was received from a diverter upstream of the barrier site during a low tide event recently.  Due to expected lower SJR flows, high export rates, and increased irrigation diversions in the area as the growing season continues, we decided to install the MR barrier.  Typically problems occur on this river in the summer primarily because of poor water conveyance in MR channels due to sediment accumulation.  The DMC and GLC barriers may be installed later in July if conditions require them.

Modeling:

No modeling was done but modeling will begin next week.
