The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate. This report will be transmitted whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.
STATUS AS OF: November 2, 2007Head of Old River Barrier (HORB):
At the request of DFG this week, the removal of the Head of Old River barrier will be postponed from the original scheduled removal date until November 15. This will allow more time for the operation of the HOR barrier to benefit migrating salmon. Three of the six culverts at the HOR barrier will be opened to allow additional flow into Old River to help protect water levels while the ag barriers are being removed. Water levels will continue to be closely monitored to determine if additional HOR barrier culvert openings or partial removal is necessary prior to November 15 in order to ensure adequate water levels in the south Delta.
Agricultural Barriers (Old River near Tracy [ORT], Middle River [MR], Grant Line Canal [GLC]):
The removal of the Old River near Tracy and Grant Line Canal barriers will begin on November 5 and November 6 respectively, with breaches occurring the following days. The Middle River barrier will be breached on November 27. All in-water work will be completed before November 30, 2007.
Modeling was not done this week as the barriers will begin to be removed beginning next week. However, we will closely monitor water levels and open culverts or perform a partial breach at the HOR barrier to improve water levels if conditions warrant it.
