The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate. This report will be transmitted whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.
STATUS AS OF: November 14, 2008
Head of Old River Barrier (HORB):
The fall Head of Old River barrier was breached on Monday, November 3, and has been completely removed from the channel. Minor cleanup continues on the north levee.
Agricultural Barriers (Old River near Tracy [ORT], Middle River [MR], Grant Line Canal [GLC]):
Following the breaching of the HOR barrier, the Old River Tracy barrier was breached on November 4. The breaching of the Middle River barrier—originally scheduled for November 19—was moved up to November 5 due to delays in getting diving approvals for the Old River near Tracy barrier and the need to keep crews and equipment working. The Grant Line Canal barrier was breached on November 11. The in-water work will be completed by the end of November in accordance with our permits and biological opinions.
Modeling was not done this week because the barriers are being removed and no actions can be taken at the barriers to respond to actual or projected water level or water quality conditions.
DWR is planning on removing deteriorated culverts at the MR barrier before the end of November and replacing them during the spring installation so the barrier will operate properly. These culverts normally remain in the channel all year long..
