The following report on the Temporary Barriers Project is for your information and action, as appropriate. This report will be transmitted whenever changes occur to the operation of the barriers, and as a result of modeling and/or field monitoring of water levels in the south Delta.
STATUS AS OF: June 29, 2012
Head of Old River (HOR) Barrier:
Construction of the Head of Old River barrier began on March 15, 2012. Barrier closure and operation were achieved at noon on April 1, all eight slide-gate culverts were in the open position. Operation of the HOR barrier was concluded on May 31, 2012. Removal of the barrier began on June 1, 2012, starting with the clay section and the concrete mats. The barrier was breached on Monday, June 4, and removal of rock fill, culverts, and structures continue. Full removal of the barrier occurred on June 21, and equipment was removed from the site on June 22, 2012.
The data collection period of the Head of Old River Fish Study is complete, the last juvenile Chinook Salmon release took place on May 27, 2012, and the HTI acoustic telemetry system was turned off on the morning of May 31, 2012. All fish monitoring equipment was removed by May 31. The analysis of 2012 data, combined with the data collected over the past few years, will give insight into juvenile Chinook and predator behavior in the vicinity of the Head of Old River under differing hydrologic and barrier conditions.
Agricultural Barriers (Middle River [MR], Old River near Tracy [ORT], Grant Line Canal [GLC]):
Construction of the Middle River barrier began on March 12 and closure was obtained on March 16. All flap gates are tidally operated. The center weir will be raised on Monday July 2.
Construction of the Old River near Tracy barrier began on March 15, and closure and operation started on March 31. The boat ramp and portage is in full operation as of Wednesday, April 4. Demobilizing and site cleanup was completed on Friday April 6. The center 4 culverts are tied open on Monday, June 25, 2012 .
The construction of the Grant Line Canal barrier is complete. Closure of the center weir portion of the barrier occurred on May 5, 2012. Culvert flap gates are scheduled to operate tidally on either June 29 or July 2. The boat ramp and portage is in full operation. DWR completed installation of the new flash board structure on June 14, 2012.
Environmental Permits Compliance Reporting:
No construction activity this week.
Water Quality Monitoring:
No construction activity this week.
Water Levels and Water Quality Notifications:
Informational: In response to increased south Delta salinity the center 4 culverts are tied open on Monday, June 25. This change is intended to improve flow and water quality in Old River.
Modeling results are attached and forecasted minimum water levels are above target levels at all three stations, Middle River at Howard Road (MHR), Old River at Tracy Boulevard (OLD), and Doughty Cut (DGL). When this run was made, it assumed that all GLC culverts are released to tidal operation and the MR barrier is raised on Friday 29, 2012. ORT barrier remains with 4 culverts tied open.
Water levels for the forecast period are as follows:
MHR – Actual low water levels are slightly below the modeled forecast. Minimum model forecasted water levels will occur on July 11, 2012 at approximately 0.5 ft (~ 0.2 ft above the target level of 0.3 ft.)
OLD – Actual low water levels are slightly below the modeled forecast. Minimum model forecasted water levels will occur on July 11, 2012 at approximately 0.7 ft (~ 0.7 ft above the target level of 0.0 ft.)
DGL – Actual low water levels are slightly below the modeled forecast. Minimum modeled forecast water levels will occur on July 11, 2012 at approximately 0.8 ft (~ 0.8 ft above the target level of 0.0 ft.)
